The Fortress Has A New Resident

By Francis W. Porretto

There was no Rumination today because of the new arrival, freshly fetched from Amity Newfoundlands of Mahwah, New Jersey:

Please give a warm welcome to Rufus the Newfus!

UPDATE: Because you're just dying to know: Rufus was born on July 9, 2009, so he's about 9 months old. He's pure black and weighs about 140 lb. (We're praying he won't get too much bigger.) He comes from champion stock on both sides: Pouch Cove Newfoundlands, whose "Josh" won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2004, provided his father "Caleb;" Amity Newfs' "Bella" was his mother. He drools copiously, wants to eat whatever you're eating, and is entirely too affectionate; the C.S.O. and I are going to have to do at least one load of laundry per day for the foreseeable future. He's one ribbon short of being a champion himself, and his breeders, Tom and Diane Broderick of Amity Newfs, will be helping us to show him until he's got it.

Yes, we're going to keep him intact for breeding purposes. (Know any lovelorn female Newfs from good families?)

Hi Rufus. Remember, start training ‘em early and they’ll throw sticks for you all day.

  6. Does Rufus the Newfus like to drink screech?
I found it to be the “beverage of choice” of the real Newfies that I met when stationed there while in the army. All you have to do is teach him to say: “Gew hewm yoink” which is newfie for “go home yank”; to which the standard rejoinder was: “I’d like nothing better Newf”.
    wink

  11. Excellent choice!  Newfoundlands are </i>beautiful</i> dogs and extremely affectionate companions.  They are also very, very big.  I hope the missus likes dogs.

Exercise.  The bad news is they need lots of it.  The good news is they need lots of it.  I expect to see a picture of you next year where you’ll look at least 20 lbs lighter.

Do you like to swim?  Rufus almost certainly will.

Congratulations on your new family member.  You lucky dog you!
