The Dilemma Of Democracy: A Coda

By Francis W. Porretto

At Let’s Try Freedom, Robert Hayes has made precisely the sort of pledge Americans must make if we’re to “stay in business” past tomorrow’s election:

If John Kerry wins, reasonably fair, reasonably square, then he will become my President and I will support him.  That doesn’t mean I won’t fight him like the devil on all the many, many things he will do that are wrong and bad; I will.  That doesn’t mean I won’t criticize him ferociously and with a partisan growl; I will.

But I won’t declare that he is an illegitimate leader....

Here’s what it boils down to, folks:

If John Kerry wins the election, reasonably fair, reasonably square, then he becomes my President and your President.

If George Bush wins the election, reasonably fair, reasonably square, then he remains my President and your President.

This is my pledge, my promise, my what-have-you.  It’s written down, in black and white.  Call me on it if I renege.

I ask everybody who reads this to do two things if they agree with me.

One, say it loud and say it proud, the winner of the 2004 election is my President, and whether I like him or not, whether I agree with him or not, I’m not going to be a Michael Moore-style flaming gasbag asshat about it.

Two, pass the link along.  Send it to your friends, post it on your blog, whatever.  It’s important.  We are one country, and we have to pull together whether we agree with one another or not.

Done, Bob. Eternity Road readers: This is our challenge, not merely to the Left, but to ourselves. We know the rules of this game. Are we honestly willing to abide by them even if they rule us defeated?

  1. Problem is, Fran, the Democrats have already served notice they intend to cheat. That’s not fair and square.

  2. If kerry wins, he’ll be MY president. I won’t LIKE it, and I’ll try to UNDO the damage he will inevitably cause, but that won’t change the facts.

  3. A total outsider’s note:

I’d hate to sound like a spoiler (no, really), but when has the left ever minded *useless* details like “keeping your promise”? You know, things that have to do with “moral rectitude” (horrors), “character” (oh, the humanity), etc.?

For contrast, just look at Mark’s comment: He takes their word for it and trusts them when they say they’ll cheat—in other words (if other words are needed), he responds like any healthy, *decent* man would. Very unlike a leftie, that is.

I hate to say this, but would you really believe them if they said (even with a solemn face) “Ok, we’ll be good boys”?

The left believes that they have “zero” (nada, zilch) reasons to be faithfull to the “rotten bourgeois system.” By their perverse logic, it is *the* decent thing to do to *screw* it and its supporters.

Please, I know; I sound like yesterday’s news. But… it’s the truth. No?

I want to think like you do; I’m just having difficulty being convinced. Do excuse me!

(I’m not faking moral high ground by pretentious cynicism: I have leftie friends I’ve known since I was 5; I’ve been working on some of them for almost a decade now, relentlessly, sending link after link, article upon column upon essay upon commentary. Guess how many converts I’ve managed? None. That’s right. ZERO! No need to say, I’m not celebrating this; it’s the sad truth. :-( )

Ignore my words. If you believe this is the decent path to take, please go ahead!

  4. I find Hayes post quite insulting and believe it is contrary to moral principles.  Asking me to commit to someone whom I view as a traitor simply because the majority did so?  NO WAY!

If the question is “Are you going to go ballistic if your candidate loses and start shooting at innocent people?” the answer is, of course, “no.”

But if Kerry were to win, he wouldn’t be “my president” anymore than JFK was the president which he stole by tampering with votes.

The reality might not change very much, but I could never rally behind a man that I believe is a traitor to this nation, was backed and supported by communists, or the third rail use of the media.

I would do whatever was within my power to prevent Kerry from accomplishing any of his socialist agenda and would investigate every avenue that would allow us to legally remove him from office.

But, it’s actually easier than all of this.  If John Kerry wins, reasonably fair, reasonably square it would be a miracle, equivalent to hell freezing over and pigs flying past my window.  That’s simply not a reasonably or feasible outcome.  With all the lies I’ve seen Kerry make “reasonably fair” could never be a factor.

I suppose that isn’t quite the answer you were going for.  But commit to a traitor and a liar so we can all play nice?  Uhhh.  NO!

  5. I agree, you owe honesty to those who will be honest with you, no more.  I am sorry; much as I want a unified nation under terms I like or dislike, I see no point in being honest or playing by the rules with those who do not play by the rules. It is self destruction.  Watch, and if they set aside rule “X” you do the same.  If they set aside rule “y”, you do also.  Anything less is capitulation to dishonesty.
An oath before they take their position is not prudent, even if they take the oath you must watch their wilingness and past recoprd at honesty.
