“I Am Joe The Plumber”
I don't feel well. Not in a physical sense, even though I'm still up from last night. I'm very, very nervous and anxious. And angry.
You see, I am Joe the Plumber.
Not exactly, no. I'm what Joe would like to become: the owner of a small business that's doing well. Yes, that business is me and me only, it sells nothing but my skills at marketing, but the resemblance is close enough to make us relevant to each other.
I could have been the person Barack Obama approached for a question. I could have been the one to ask him what his proposed tax increases would do to me. I could have become the unwilling media sensation. I could have been the one whose past was raked over by a massively partisan media seeking my destruction.
I don't think Joe realized how brave he was being when he asked his question. I'll bet he regrets it now, even if it should prove to be the killing stroke that dooms the Obama campaign.
There's no limit to the viciousness of the media in this country, is there? The same media that regards Obama's ties to Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, Bill Ayres and Bernadine Dohrn, Franklin Raines, and Alex Giannoulias as not at all newsworthy is determined to smear a defenseless Ohio plumber, just because he innocently goosed Obama into revealing the socialism at the core of his convictions. Of course, what they've done in their attempts to destroy Sarah Palin was a giveaway, but Governor Palin is a public figure. We have to expect politicians disliked by the Left to get that sort of treatment. No one expected it to land on a private citizen with no political ambitions and no connection to either campaign.
It could have been me. That's the thought I can't shake. And if Obama should be elected...?
Joe the Plumber has a relatively clean past. There's nothing there that discredits him personally or jeopardizes him legally. But he's in the hottest hot water a law-abiding private citizen could possibly be in, because he was solicited for a question at an Obama public appearance, and he dared to ask one.
My past wouldn't stand up to the sort of scrutiny Joe's has received. And I make a lot more money than he does.
If Obama is elected, that sort of strip-searching will be the mildest of the things to happen to people who object to his rule. There'll be indictments and prosecutions of persons alleged to have said "threatening things." There'll be IRS investigations of anyone who attends an anti-tax rally. There'll be changes to the rules that limit government accumulation of information about people who buy guns. Count on it. His style of politics demands it.
I'm going to rent a car and drive out onto the continent today, maybe to Sullivan or Delaware County. I'm going to find a nice, clean gun shop and start a little collection. Nothing too conspicuous, just a nice rifle in some modest caliber and about a million rounds of ammunition for it. Maybe I can find one that matches my new boots. I'll ask Fran to teach me how to shoot.
I was born and raised in a socialist country. I know what socialism means, and what it does to the people who suffer it. I'm not going to watch it settle over America while I just sit here unprepared. There's no place to run. There's no place to hide.
No, Obama might not win on November 4. But that's no excuse for being unprepared. We know what he intends, now. We have a choice to make. I pray that we make it intelligently. And if too many of us should be seduced by his charisma, I pray that we're prepared for what comes after. I intend to be prepared.
Because I am Joe the Plumber. And so are you.

Having been blessed to have been born & raised in America, and only visiting certain of our military allies on brief visis during my military career, I have no concept of how one can prepare for something like this. Do you have concrete suggestions?
Posted by on 10/18/2008 at 10:04 AMYou’re absolutely right - there are a lot of Joe the Plumbers who could have been the unfortunate one. He does NOT deserve the treatment he’s received. Especially disturbing to me is the way non-media, “normal” people have publicly denigrated him for his views. He simply disagrees with them and he’s called sub-human, selfish, stupid, evil, etc. I’m afraid it is going to be a bumpy ride.
Posted by on 10/18/2008 at 10:21 AMEven if Obama loses, the people that support him will try again. And again. And work hard to work inside the Republican Party to groom a candidate just like Obama, and then we’ll be voting for Kodos or Kang.
Fran’s tripod of a stable society is dead on and needs all the support we can throw into the three legs.
Posted by Russell on 10/18/2008 at 10:36 AMI orignally had a long missive written, but then I came to my senses. The only thing I would sugest is to also get a 22lr rifle for target practice. Dirt cheap, fun and you can pratice with it on the range on 20th st, http://www.westsidepistolrange.com. Taurus makes some nice 22lr that break down into 2 pieces so it will not look like you are carrying a gun around. Here is a good place to ask questions: http://theguncounter.com/forum/
Good luck with this,

Posted by on 10/18/2008 at 07:05 PMFran, Thanks so much for your very kind comment earlier. I don’t read your web log nearly as often as I’d like to (which would be daily) but do get by a couple times a week.
I’ve quoted you and linked to you here: http://consul-at-arms.blogspot.com/2008/10/re-i-am-joe-plumber.html
P.S. CAA is not a member of an organized religion: he is Roman Catholic.

I wish I could take credit for it, but this is actually one of Duyen Ky’s posts. I’ll pass your praise along to her—and thanks once again for all your kind words.
All my best,
