A Teensy Bit Of News
In case you've been wondering why I've been so quiet, there's been a little development.
Matt proposed last Saturday.
I'm engaged to be married.
I've spent most of the week getting over the shock -- in a good way, of course.
No, we haven't set a date yet. We haven't even decided where we're going to live. Things have been happening fast for me, and it's time to slow them down a little.
Matt's comfortable with a longish delay. Things have been happening fast for him, too. (Some of them are very exciting, but he hasn't given me permission to talk about them yet.) So we're likely to have a protracted engagement -- probably until my current contract is over and we have to decide which coast to live on. ("Gives you a whole year to try to weasel out of it," he just said.)
And to think all I wanted was a drive in the country and to look at a few guns!
Be happy for me. Everyone. Please.

Congratulations. Marriage is a whole new way of life.
And I empathize with the “all I wanted to do was look at guns”. all I offered to do was write a friend while he was in the sandbox, and it’s coming up on four years now.
And the engagement give he gave me was a very nice Ruger too.

Posted by Mark Alger on 03/28/2009 at 11:08 AMCongratulations!! As has happened to me, and what I have told my genetic hostages, love (and marriage) often sneak up on you when least looked for or expected.
May the two of you build many happy memories while traveling down life’s road together.
Posted by Guy S on 03/28/2009 at 11:36 AMCongratulations, and the best of luck to you both.
In my experience, a long engagement worked well. It gave us lots of time to plan the wedding, book the facilities, etc., and gave our families enough time to plan coming to this continent. Also, since we were already living together there was no urgency to get to the marriage bed, so there was no feeling of delay on that score. (I don’t know if that applies in your case, and I do not presume to speculate—just sharing my experience.)
If the two of you practice the things you have written about on your first blog, I anticipate a great deal of joy in your marriage. Once again, I offer my heart-felt congratulations.
Posted by on 03/28/2009 at 12:06 PMSometimes you just know it’s right. Don’t worry about the speed. It sounds to me that everything is well taken care of.
The Turks would say, “Tanrı mesut etsin!” I will give you the English equivalent, “May God grant you sublime joy!”
Please don’t let that scoundrel deprive of us your company, however. We miss your writing enough as it is!

Posted by on 03/28/2009 at 04:18 PMBe happy for you? I don’t need to be asked to do that!
As a wise man once said, “May you live as long as you wish, and love as long as you live.”
Posted by Erbo on 03/28/2009 at 08:51 PMCongratulations! Even in these perilous times, marriage is a wonderful thing. As the old Book says, “two are stronger than one, and a cord of three strands is not easily broken.” Be happy and blessed in this season of preparation.

I’m jealous of that lucky git!
Sincerely, congratulations and I hope you two have a wonderful life together. You, at least, deserve the happiness that can come with a good marriage.
(heh, that’ll teach you to window shop for guns in the future)

Posted by TJIC on 03/30/2009 at 10:23 PMIt’s more than a bit embarassing that I find it easier to be happy about the engagement of a wonderful woman such as yourself now that I’ve already gotten the most wonderful woman on Earth to marry me. I’m not entirely proud of that.
But I am happy for you. And my congratulations go out to my fellow Matt.
