Last Memorial Day I published a song here in poem form called, “Privet Hedges.”

By Rachel Peepers

Today I sang it. You can find it on youtube under, “herpur7”. Pretty soon, a good friend of mine with a great voice will do his version on youtube. I am so blessed to have so many friends who’ve been there for me since I’ve been ill and trying to get my health back 100%. In the meantime, though, I wanted you to be able to hear my version of the song, not because I can sing but because it suggests there’s something more to life and living than often we allow ourselves to accept. In the autumn of my life I’ve turned to some serious songwriting, some of which tries to connect to my belief that there’s a richness beyond that calls all of us. Not just Republicans. Or people that pay their taxes or that have 140 IQ’s. I feel there’s something special calling each and every one of us. Which is one reason why I read everything you write here. I don’t want to miss a thing. And someday, if just for one day, I so want to walk that walk on Glen Avenue that takes you to Sea Cliff’s Clifton Park and once more be consumed by that smell of Privet Hedges.

  1. Mr. Porretto:

I confess my attention was riveted on the cat, wondering if it would react to the music?

Why didn’t you embed the video on your web site?

When I create a video of an original song I’ve composed, I always include a copy of the lyrics, so folks can follow along, or learn the song.

Sometimes, I also do that when performing songs that other folks wrote, especially if the song is obscure, or the lyrics difficult to find.

Examples of this are, “PRETTY IRISH GIRL”, “BELLS OF SAINT MARY’S”, “THE STORY OF HAZEL MINER”, and “CHRISTMAS EVE IN WASHINGTON”.

(I really wish more people knew the story of Hazel Miner - - - , have you ever heard of her, and what she did?)

Another reason for posting a copy of the lyrics is consideration for those who have difficulty hearing, or distinguishing various sounds.

For instance, while I can usually understand what a lone individual is singing, I have a hard time understanding words being mouthed by a choir or a band.

My own YOU TUBE channel (if you’re interested) is, “writesong”.

When you embed a video on your web site, resize it, so it will fit properly.

To do so, simply change the numbers in the embedding code from whatever they are to “425” and “344” respectively.

Those size numbers are located near the beginning of the code, and near the end of the code, so be sure to change the numbers in both places.

That’s how I do it, and lacking any formal education in computer technology, I’ve had to learn everything the hard way, through “by guess and by gosh!” trial and error experimentation.

By the way, your web site is linked to my own, and I publicly follow your web site.

    Thank you.
