Kozmic Kop
Remus notices Sarah Palin has applied for and received a Junior Word Police badge. Seems Rahm Emanuel used the word retarded to describe members of his party who opposed ObamaCare. Ms. Palin, mother of a Down's Syndrome child, is appalled and demands an apology. Now, Mr. Emanuel is the kind of politician that needs attention by the Roto-Rooter people, but that isn't the point. Not only does she not get to decide what we say, she doesn't get to decide how we say it. If Ms. Palin believes her private sensibilities must be uppermost in our minds, that she somehow has a right not to be offended, then she is—you got it—retarded. And here's a time-saving hint for her, she shouldn't hang around her mailbox looking for an apology.
Sarah Palin is revealing herself as just another 'too precious to live' political hack who thinks the rest of us live to de-pea her mattress. What shall we hear from her next, a jaunty rendition of The Good Ship Lollipop—"c'mon, join in, it'll be fun." A Nancy Pelosi in the making. Politicians. From a distance they look like real people, even act like real people. Then they open their mouths and it's like being trapped in a Body Snatchers remake. Perhaps we should build a fence of electrified razor wire around DC, anybody's free to go in but nobody gets out. Ever. Let 'em hector each other and leave regular folks alone.

To refer to a retarded person as “retarded” is simple accuracy (sorry, Sarah, it is what it is). The word has a meaning, and its correct (not politically correct) use is fair game.
To refer to a fully-functional person with whom you disagree as “retarded”, in order to denigrate that person, is an abuse of that person, of the word, and of the genuinely retarded. That goes for Mr. Emmanuel, and it goes for you. “If Ms. Palin believes [whatever], then she is...retarded.” No, that is not the measure of retardation, and the term is misapplied.
Posted by on 02/04/2010 at 06:41 AMToo many people have peas under their mattresses and believe themselves to be princesses, apparently. It’s a sad commentary on the state of society.
I like people who aren’t afraid to speak as they will. Especially since I’m apt to be a bit of a ‘tard myself now and then.
Posted by Deb S. on 02/04/2010 at 11:26 AMTo the extent that Emmanuel’s description of his co-partisans is descriptive of their behavior, it is accurate.
To the extent that leftists attempt to whipsaw their opponents by manipulating their public images according to leftist (read: “politically correct") touchstones and shibboleths, it is entirely apposite that Governor Palin hoist Emmanuel on his own petard. Or canard, if you will.
To the extent that Governor Palin actually believes that the insult does true injury, she is inversely cynical.
In a world of “progressive” political correctness, the expression of cynical conformation is a revolutionary act.

I stand corrected. Policy disagreement is retarded behavior.
Thank you for this education.
(Actually, I disagree with you, but value the English language too much to proceed by your logic to calling you “retarded”.)
Posted by on 02/04/2010 at 01:37 PMHopefully, Palin will eventually decide NOT to run for office, and to accept that her real role is that of charismatic gadfly. If so, she’ll not only do the right thing for the Right, she’ll also prove she ain’t as retarded as some would like to think.
Posted by on 02/04/2010 at 02:58 PMExGeeEye misses the point and confirms it simultaneously. Sarah Palin believes she is authorized, somehow, to disallow the word retarded in any context other than the clinical, and further, that deviation is an offense warranting self flagellation and abject apology to mankind in general. It’s a transparent pretense revealing a childlike need to have her personal code imposed on others and in doing so she demonstrates lack of basic respect for any speaker not actually and currently Sarah Palin. Real life is a wild ride where the widest possible latitude is not merely desirable but downright necessary. Those who build their life around being perpetually offended, who examine every comment for some imagined ethical emergency, who tippy-toe around every imaginable sensitivity, should excuse themselves and play a safer game that fits their limitations.
Posted by Ol' Remus on 02/04/2010 at 04:25 PMYou are chartreuse, and combustible.
Figuratively speaking of course.
You may notice that that made no rational sense.
Clear communications depend upon a common understanding of the meaning of the words we use.
Posted by on 02/04/2010 at 06:53 PMUpon further review of the play, I see that this comment by Emanuel was made like six months ago?
Palin is a Feeb.
Posted by Deb S. on 02/04/2010 at 08:27 PMDhimmicraps who oppose Obamascare are retards, not because they oppose Obamascare but because they are Dhimmicraps to begin with.
