Truthers
Hello everybody. This is Fetiche. After Fran's nice announcement earlier today, I thought I should at least introduce myself, even if I had nothing much to say. But just a little while ago, I had an encounter with a "truther." Up till then I never really believed they existed.
My politics are a lot like Fran's. I'm a Catholic, a conservative when I have to think about it, and mostly want the government to leave me alone. I can think of a lot of reasons to criticize Washington, and Sacramento, and the city government of Los Angeles (my permanent home), and EVERYTHING about Manhattan (my current home). But I can't believe that any American government would contrive the slaughter of thousands of its own people just to create a pretext for a war.
The truther I was talking to kept telling me "just Google '9/11 the truth' and follow the links." He seemed to think that evidence consists of people claiming things, rather than material objects and eyewitness testimony. He couldn't give me a better reason for his belief than that the Bush Administration wanted a reason to go to war against Iraq. When I reminded him that 9/11 was the SECOND attack on the World Trade Center, he shrugged it off -- even though the first one was under the Clinton Administration, and was proved to be the work of an Islamist conspiracy.
What is it with these people? Would they have believed anything this insane if 9/11 had happened while a Democrat was in the White House? Or are they just conjuring up as many reasons as they can to hate President Bush, his Administration, the Republican Party, and America?
President Clinton used to send out the bombers for a lot of reasons. I can't remember one instance when American interests were involved. Did any conspiracy theories form around those sorties?
Do you see why I prefer to write about fashion and sexy shoes?
As I said, I felt I should introduce myself. I'll be back with something more interesting in a day or two, I hope.

Some times I run into the communist workers party at the 168th st train station. Talk about fantasy land.
