A Second Coming

By Francis W. Porretto Francis W. Porretto's avatar

Your Curmudgeon has taken some flak for his assertion that Islam is not a religion but rather a theologically-decorated program for the totalitarian domination of the world. Those who’ve castigated him for it have seldom spared themselves the use of the hoary old comparisons to the Crusades and the Inquisition, even though the Crusades were attempts to retake the Holy Land from Muslim conquerors and the Inquisitions were explicitly in contradiction to the teachings of Christ. One even argued that the abortion clinic bombings that have taken place in this country since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion should be laid at Christianity’s door. Therefore, they conclude, there’s no reason for preferring Christianity over Islam.

Every religion has been espoused by some villain or lunatic. Every creed has been cited as justification for some atrocity. But among the major religions, only Islam has imbedded as a core dogma the demand that its followers impose it on the entire world by any means expedient, including the use of lethal violence.

Your Curmudgeon has catalogued the horrors of Islam many times: its brutalizations of women and slaughters of “infidels,” its blessing of rape and slavery, its barbaric shari’a code of “justice,” its demand that apostates, heretics and blasphemers be killed for “betraying Islam,” its cries of anathema upon any non-Islamic authority, its self-granted license to commit any crime or deceit that will somehow conduce to the benefit of Islam and the ummah. At this point, there is no excuse for an intelligent man who fancies himself well informed about the currents of the world not to know all of this. Yet we continue to hear about a will-o’the-wisp called “moderate Islam,” which supposedly abjures all the above, and is therefore fit for human consumption and may be tolerated in our communities.

We hear about it…but we never see it. What we do see is what Charles Johnson has collated from major Islamic sermons, delivered in the creed’s most prestigious mosques. What we do see are innumerable reports of homicide bombings committed with a shout of “Allahu Akbar!” What we do see are Black Tuesday, the Maryland snipers, Sergeant Hasan Akbar, and the bombings in Bali and Madrid.

Where is this “moderate Islam”? Who are its spokesmen? Why are their voices inaudible?

Have the devotees of “immoderate Islam” cowed the “moderates” into silence? Or have the “moderates” realized that, since they’ve decided to “edit” the Qur’an and the other dictates of Mohammed to remove the nasty parts—quite an excision, that—in outright contradiction of the Qur’an’s doctrinal status as the literal, unmodifiable, uninterpretable word of God, therefore they’re not really Muslims at all?

But let’s not spend all our energy hunting for hens’ teeth. It’s more important to understand the nominally secular forces of liberalism here in America that have elected to promote Islam in our public schools, even as they denigrate and expel Christianity. Given that these persons have so stridently demanded that all religion be expunged from the public square and especially the schools, why this indulgence toward Islam?

Are they unaware that Islam has explicitly allied itself with Nazism? That the most scurrilous, racist, anti-Semitic tracts ever composed, including both Mein Kampf and The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion, are enthusiastically distributed by Muslim proselytizers?

If they don’t know these things, would learning about any of it change their behavior in the slightest degree?

It is difficult to find consistency in their attitudes, unless it consists of an antipathy to all things traditionally American.

President Bush and his administration have evaded the question of whether Islam itself, as opposed to “Islamism,” is a threat to America or the West. This might be a matter of political necessity. But the core tenets of Islam do not lend themselves to a kindly evaluation. The behavior of its highest-profile spokesmen, the potentates of Muslim-majority states, and the bloodthirsty mobs of the Middle East confirm a deep and enduring hostility toward the norms of the West. Your Curmudgeon is convinced that, were it within their power to subjugate us, the world’s Islamic states would do so with extreme brutality, and without a qualm. Americans who call themselves Muslims would be required by the dictates of their creed to cheer for it, to assist it however they could, and to applaud the results regardless of their savagery, on pain of death.

The behavior of Muslim immigrants to Western lands has given ample indication of this. Their mosques have provided generous support to Islamic terrorism. They have brought to their new homes the practice of subjugating and sequestering their womenfolk. They have flouted the laws of their host countries; in some they’ve set up “shari’a courts” which levy judgments and pronounce penalties outside all legitimate authority. They have called down the foulest imprecations upon the heads of any who have dared to suggest that violence against the innocent is never excusable, that all men, regardless of their religion, are required to obey the duly enacted laws of their nation.

It is sickening to see American liberals align themselves with these rabid enemies of freedom and practitioners of medieval barbarity. It is incomprehensible that they should do so, when so many of their cherished positions are considered abominations by Islam. Yet they do this while simultaneously deriding Christianity and Christian observance and condemning its communicants as “irrational” and “intolerant.”

If there’s anyone we should ask to justify his allegiances at this time, he’s not an adherent of the faith whose Founder went to a horrible death to save the world from itself, who counseled loving and praying for your enemies even as they persecute you.

Attorney-General John Ashcroft, the most unfairly calumniated public official of our day, was dead on the mark when he noted that “In Islam, God asks you to send your son to die for him. In Christianity, God sends His Son to die for you.”

To which your Curmudgeon can only add, “Amen.”
